The St Vincent de Paul Society are a group of people found in most parishes who volunteer to be of help to local people who are in need.

It was a Frenchman, Frédéric Ozanam, who founded the SVP Society. On this day in 1997 Pope John Paul II beatified him - naming him “Blessed Frédéric Ozanam”, being a step on the way to calling him a saint. Saints are people put forward as an example from whom we can learn. Frédéric was a married man living with great faith and concern for other people. He wrote that he “dreamed of encircling the whole world with a network of love and care.”

Lord, may my attitude and all that I think and do

always be based on a spirit of love and care,

so that I may make a difference in my own part of the world

by treating people as individuals.

Week 5

Miss Emma McDonnell is continuing to make good progress and we are hoping that she will be moved from hospital to a rehabilitation facility either at the end of this week or beginning of next week to continue her recovery. She is looking forward to the move.

Emma will need time and rest to heal. For this reason, Emma will not return to school in Term 3 and if she does return during Term 4 it will be on a reduced load. A letter was sent home to students in Kindergarten and Year 2 today which outlines staffing arrangements that have been made.

Mrs Kate Maher will be taking Kindergarten for the remainder of the year. Mrs Susie Alexander and Mrs Emma Randall will be teaching Year 2. We thank these teachers for their flexibility, expertise and dedication to our students in being prepared to take on these changes during this difficult time.

Please also pray for Fr Joshy and his family and friends. Fr Joshy’s home region has been effected by massive flooding and his family has needed to be evacuated. An enormous amount of rain has fallen and we pray for the safety of all in the region

School Fees reminder

Fees are due 31 August and late fee payments will incur a $50 late fee which will be added to your fees. Please note that if we have requested information for fee remission processing and it has not yet been received that we will be sending accounts to debt collectors.

Book Parade

Good luck to all our students and staff who will be dressing up as their favourite book characters tomorrow. We are looking forward to hearing all about our students’ choices and joining with other schools and groups as they parade around Fisher Park tomorrow. Whilst we are very disappointed that we are unable to walk along the main street this year, we hope that many parents, friends and family will join and support us at the park.

Early Stage 1 Reflection Day

Early Stage 1 had a fabulous day at their reflection day yesterday as they reflected on the message “We are all welcome in God’s House”. Students participated in prayer, fun games, reflective times and working together as a team throughout the day. Thanks to Mrs Patrece Maxwell, Mrs Susie Alexander and Mrs Heather Kingwill for helping our students to have such a great day.

Archdiocesan Athletics

Congratulations to Will English, Angus Roberts and Claudia McLeod who were successful in Canberra on Tuesday at the Archdiocesan Athletics carnival. We wish them all the best as they prepare to travel to Sydney for MacKillop and CCC athletics carnivals later in the term.

Wattle Time Fair and Street Parade

Please join us on Saturday as our school participates in the Wattle Time Parade from 12noon. All students who would like to climb aboard our Wattle Float need to meet me at 11.40am on Murray St near Furniture One (Fisher Park side). We wish Cootamundra all the best as they celebrate all the great things about Cootamundra at the Wattle Time Fair and hope all have a terrific day as they enjoy the festivities.

Early Stage 1 Reflection Day

This Wednesday Early Stage 1 headed off to Dickson Hall to enjoy their very first Reflection Day. The theme of the day was “We are part of Jesus’s Family” Early Stage 1 Mrs Maxwell, Mrs Kingwill and Mrs Alexander all had a wonderful day singing, creating beautiful pieces of art and talking about how everyone is welcomed in Gods house and how we can be great friends to all.

1GH celebrated their class mass yesterday. The theme was Witness: Spread of the Gospel. Father Joshy spoke to us about how we can say hi to God and talk to him every day.

Southern Sports Academy

After a year without the Netball Officiating Program, the Academy is pleased to announce that the program will be back for 2019.  We are now calling for nominations for the 2019 Wagga RSL Club Netball Officiating Program.  The nomination forms for the 2019 squad need to be returned to the Academy by Friday 28^thSeptember 2018.

This year, as part of the selection process for the Netball program, all intending nominees must be available to attend a phase one clinic at the Junee Recreational Centre, Junee on Saturday 6^th October (from 11.30am till 4.00pm).  Athletes selected from this day will then attend phase two selections which will be held the following day on Sunday 7^th October (from 9.00am till 4.00pm) at the Junee Recreational Centre. 

To be eligible for consideration, nominees must be born between 1999 and 2005 inclusive.

Application forms will also be available online at the Academy Web Page www.ssa-nsw.org.au.

DUBBO MATCH REPORTS

UNDER 13’s

The commentary box labelled it the “match of the day” when the Sacred Heart Central School and Tenterfield High School battled it out for the title of Small Schools State Champions in Dubbo last week. Unfortunately for the Cootamundra side, the continuous change in the lead was in favour of the Tenterfield side when the final siren went at full time.

The match began well for Sacred Heart with good early defence from Riley Kennedy. Strong runs from the Sam Sharman and Toby Rumble set up a try to Cootamundra through Ethan Shepherd with the kick from Sam Sharman successful Cootamundra went to an early 6-0 lead. Tenterfield immediately struck back with a try under the posts and a 6-6 score line. The kick-off from Sam Sheahan was dropped by Tenterfield and Cootamundra was back on the attack. Darcy O'Toole was held up over the line and this was soon followed by Ben Rumble’s unfortunate knock-on over the line. A great backline movement saw Darcy O'Toole score in the corner for a 10-6 lead. Tenterfield again strike back immediately to score under the posts and a fluctuating score of 12-10. The support play of Ryan Bourne, Sam Nasser and Jed Guthrie spurred on the team and kept the Sacred Heart side keen to compete. With seven minutes remaining in the first half, the ball was stripped from Cootamundra and after the penalty they were back on the attack. A great run down the blind side from Ben Rumble and a quick play the ball enables Cootamundra to score on the stroke of half time through Darcy O'Toole to have the score now 14-12.

The second half began with an excellent break from Jake Blackney and Cootamundra were unlucky not to score early in the second half. A high kick from Tenterfield forced an error from Sacred Heart. From the scrum Tenterfield were again back in the match with a try under the posts to lead 18-14. An attacking run from a long kick enables Corey Gale to take play into the oppositions half and from the play the ball Darcy O’Toole scampers down the sideline to school in the corner, bringing up a hat trick for O’Toole. Again Tenterfield hit back immediately and the scoreboard reads 24-18. Ned Murray and Joseph Hutchinson also continue to show their commitment to the team and strive to perform at their best. Cootamundra's turn to hit back with a try next to the posts from the ever present James Patterson. The kick hits the post and Tenterfield lead 22-24. Rhyley Kennedy tackles everything that moves and with three minutes remaining Cootamundra get a pulled down on the line. A late try to Tenterfield seals the match in the last 30 seconds and a victory 30-22. Coaches Matthew Patterson and Mick Nasser were full of praise for the team and pleased with the spirit in which the game was played.

UNDER 16’s

Sacred Heart Central School under 16’s side were in Dubbo to defend their Small Schools State Champions title, and came up against a very well drilled outfit from Oberon High school

Early attack from Cootamundra got the ball over the line and they were unfortunate not to score. Oberon charged back down the field, yet knocked-on giving a scrum feed to Cootamundra. A mistake from the Sacred Heart team saw the opposition unlucky to score and the referee calling a double movement against Oberon.  Cootamundra lucky to get off the hook. Oberon were soon attacking again and a forward pass saw Cootamundra again get out of gaol. Constant pressure saw the defensive line of Sacred Heart become very challenged and Oberon were able to score for an early 4-0 lead. Oberon continued to attack and were soon leading 10-0. The Cootamundra defence is letting them down with a lack of communication.  Oberon capitalise and score to take the lead to 16-0. Bustling runs from Lachlan Sedgwick and Joe Ward are quickly shut down by the Oberon defence. Nick Holt, Jack Ruskin and Aaron Mugridge continue to tackle very well. Oberon attack again and an excellent cover tackle by Liam Bourne was unable to slow the attack down. Oberon now lead at half time 22-0. Sacred Heart started the second half with strong runs from Jim Hogan and Aaron Mugridge. Owen Battye also made a bustling run to take Cootamundra deep into Oberon territory.  Easy penalties given away by Cootamundra allow Oberon back on the attack. A strong run from the big Oberon number eight sees a try in the corner for a 26-0 lead. Bailey Sawyer defended his line well all game and was unlucky not to have more scoring opportunities come his way. Ben Rumble was strong in attack but unable to capitalise on his plays. The interchange of Charlie Howse and Sterling Cooper-Duck proved to be a successful move. Nick Holt was able to break through the defence to score a fantastic try with Cootamundra now on the board 26-6. Lachlan Wilson makes strong runs through the centre while Jay Mugridge was putting in some excellent defensive work and Cootamundra continue to now bustle the Oberon side for the best passage of play of the game. Sacred Heart soon scored next to the posts through Nick Holt with an excellent display of attack and they were now on the comeback at 26-12. Ted Caldwell and Malachi Murray continue to show excellent support for the team with their commitment. Isaac Tregear uses great initiative but is on able to capitalise on his efforts. Oberon strike back with a try in the corner and now lead 30-12. A late try to Oberon seals the victory 36-12. Mistakes from Sacred Heart were frustrating for coach John Hogan, however he was full of praise for the side emphasised the nature of the game and to be proud of their achievements in gaining the title of Southern Region Champions.
