On this day in 1997, the funeral of Diana, the young Princess of Wales, was held in Westminster Abbey. The following words were sung, and they can be our words of prayer today:
I would be true - for there are those who trust me.
I would be pure - for there are those who care.
I would be strong - for there is much to suffer.
I would be brave - for there is much to dare.
I would be friend of all, the foe, the friendless.
I would be giving, and forget the gift.
I would be humble, for I know my weakness.
I would look up, laugh, love and live.
Amen
Week 7
We have several staff currently recovering from illness and surgery. Please keep Mr Tim Mahon, Mrs Kylie O’Callaghan and Miss Emma McDonnell in your prayers. We are pleased to advise that all are recovering well and we hope that their recoveries continue quickly for them.
Staffing
A letter was sent home today with regards to my role as Principal. I am currently in my sixth year as Principal at Sacred Heart and have thoroughly enjoyed the role. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff, students and whole school community so, it is with very mixed feelings that I inform you that I will be finishing up as Principal at the end of 2018. I will be taking 12 months leave and have decided to relinquish the position so that a new Principal can be appointed for the stability of the school. I find myself in a new and exciting phase of my life and also have the great privilege of four aging parents whom I would like to take a larger role in caring for in the coming years. The position of Principal will be advertised shortly and the process of appointing a new Principal undertaken by Catholic Education. We will inform you as soon as a new Principal has been appointed.
Mrs Skye Gay will be taking maternity leave in Term 4 and we wish her all the very best as she prepares for her and Michael’s new arrival. Mrs Heather Hunt will be extending the days she teaches 1GH to four days per week. A teacher is yet to be appointed for the fifth day. We will let you know once this is determined.
Mr Brad Winsor is taking Long Service Leave during Term 4 and we wish him a restful break. Mrs Kylie Winsor will be taking 3W 4 days per week. A teacher is yet to be appointed for the fifth day.
Mrs Heather Hunt is taking leave during the last two weeks of Term 3. Ms Wendy Van Kerk Oerle will be taking 1GH with Mrs Skye Gay for those weeks.
Soup Kitchen
Our thanks to Mrs Aileen Maher for organising a group of Year 9 students to assist at the Baptist Church Hall Soup Kitchen last night. We are very proud of the students who prepared food, set up tables, served and washed up. Their participation was outstanding and their volunteering was very much appreciated. Thanks to Lara Wilson, Alice Stuart, Millie Perry, Seth Clarke, Paddy Jones and Rhyley Kennedy for giving their own time to help those in our community in need and extending genuine respect and company to those who attended.
Minimum Standards Test
Congratulations to our Year 10 students who were successful in gaining their proficiency during minimum standards testing held last week. Students who had already achieved the standard during Year 9 Naplan tests in 2017 were not required to resit the tests. Of the students who were required to sit the tests, all passed literacy and/or numeracy last week. 2 students received top band and the majority passed in writing. Of the 3 students who did not reach the minimum standard, they fell just short and from what we have been able to read into the results it appears that paragraphing is the reason they fell short. It is great to see that our students have been rewarded for their hard work and dedication to their studies, proving that effort and a growth mindset really do work.
A minimum standard of literacy and numeracy is required to receive the HSC from 2020 to reflect the importance of literacy and numeracy for success in daily life. HSC students will need to meet the HSC minimum standard in three areas – reading, writing and numeracy.
The standard is set at level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF), which means students will have the basic reading, writing and maths skills needed for everyday tasks and future learning after school. It includes skills for tasks such as:
- following safety instructions in equipment manuals
- understanding a mobile phone plan
- writing a job application
- creating a personal weekly budget.
Literacy and numeracy skills are essential for success in learning and life after school. Together with the NSW Literacy and Numeracy Strategy, the HSC minimum standard is part of an effort to extend the literacy and numeracy focus up into secondary school.
The Importance of Sleep
Students today have extremely busy schedules, with ever increasing responsibilities at school and at home. Many kids, especially adolescents, are going to bed later and later and are at risk of sleep deprivation. This affects three areas of a child’s development: psychological, physiological and psychosocial. All three are essential to a child's growth, learning ability and overall wellbeing. Sleep is vital to a child’s overall health and is as important as diet and exercise.
Sleep also strengthens a child’s immune system and supports their ability to function properly on a daily basis. Children who do not get enough sleep show increased levels of aggressive behaviour, are less attentive and are much less active. Trying to catch up on sleep on weekends is not the answer and can still lead to severe sleep deprivation.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn about the importance of sleep and how sleep deprivation can have adverse effects on a child’s health and wellbeing. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition and we always welcome your feedback.
If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information.
