The Polish scientist, Marie Curie, and her husband (Pierre) discovered 2 new elements which they called “polonium” and “radium”. The elements were radioactive.

Marie Curie’s work in radioactivity was of great benefit in medicine. It was discovered that cancerous cells could be killed by the use of small amounts of radioactivity (such as from radium), without seriously damaging nearby healthy tissue.

The Curies refused to “patent” (“to own with the intention of making profit from”) their work and discoveries, saying that, “Physicists should always publish their researches completely. If our discovery has a commercial future, that is a circumstance from which we should not profit. If radium is to be used in the treatment of disease, it is impossible for us to take advantage of that.”

Marie Curie - born in November 1867 - became world-famous, and was awarded two Nobel Prizes. Unaware in those days of the dangers of radioactivity. She died from radiation poisoning at the age of 65.

Lord, there is so much that I don’t know, and I ask you to inspire me with a thirst for knowledge.

I pray, too, for wisdom that I may use my knowledge well.

I give thanks for many people I have never met whose knowledge and understanding have been passed on to me.

I ask that I may benefit from their work and experience and may contribute, in turn, to the well-being of others.

Amen.

Week 5

Our Year 10 students have been completing their final assessments this week and we commend them for the effort they have made towards study, revision and being as prepared as they could be. They have taken examinations seriously and we thank them for their behaviour during this time.

Next week our Year 10 students will be involved in a comprehensive program put together by Mrs Megan Gale and Mr Tim Mahon. They will be involved in many activities, which will support their transition to either further study or work. We pray that they will take advantage of this excellent opportunity and listen attentively and ask questions from the many guest speakers who have volunteered their time to help our students.

Please also pray for our Year 5 and 9 students who will undertake their Leadership Days next week. Mrs Patrece Maxwell has prepared an excellent day for our students where they will spend time together learning about the importance of being a positive leader and role model at Sacred Heart.

Good luck to all our students involved in the Cootamundra Touch Carnival tomorrow. Thanks to Mrs Patrece Maxwell who has put in hours organising the day. It is shaping up to be another great day.

Don’t forget to come along and join in the fun on Sunday at the Cootamundra Country Club for our P&F Holy 13 Golf Day. Registrations start from 9.30am and hit off between 10am to 10.30am.

We would love our Primary students to attend the Apex Carnival on 24 November to sing a couple of Christmas songs for the school. Students have been practising in class and a note will go home soon with information which will have a permission note on it to be returned to the school prior to Saturday. If you are free and your child is able to attend, that would be greatly appreciated.

Our final discos for the year are on tonight. We are looking forward to a great turn out. Only students who have pre-purchased a ticket are to come.
